How to Arrange Artificial Plants and Trees

Artificial plants and trees can completely transform a room when they are arranged properly. A well-placed artificial tree can soften an empty corner, add height to a space, and make interiors feel warmer and more finished without the maintenance that comes with real plants. The key to achieving a realistic look is not just choosing a high-quality plant, but also taking the time to shape and style it correctly once it arrives.

At Leaf, we know a lot about realistic artificial plants, and one of the most common questions people ask is how to make them look as natural as possible. The good news is that modern artificial plants are designed specifically to help with this. Many feature wired stems and wired leaves, allowing you to shape the foliage to suit your room and create a more realistic appearance.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is placing an artificial plant straight into a room without arranging it first. Most plants are packed tightly for transport, which means the leaves and branches need to be dressed out properly before display. This is especially important for larger artificial trees such as olive trees, palms, bamboo, ficus trees, and topiary designs.

  1. To begin, unpack the plant carefully and stand it upright on a flat surface.
  2. Remove any outer packaging and gently separate the branches from the bottom upwards.
  3. If your artificial plant has wired leaves or stems, take your time shaping them naturally. A useful tip is to look at photographs of the real version of the plant to understand how the foliage should sit. Olive trees tend to have lighter, more open branches, while palms usually fan outward with more movement and layering.
  4. To create a natural curve on wired leaves, hold the tip of the leaf in one hand and the stem in the other, then gently run your hand along the leaf to bend it into shape. Avoid making every branch perfectly symmetrical. Real plants naturally grow unevenly, and slight variation makes artificial greenery look far more convincing.
  5. Once you have arranged the foliage, step back and check the plant from different angles. Look for gaps, compressed areas, or branches that appear too flat. Dressing out the plant properly is one of the most important steps in creating a realistic final result.

Choosing the right size plant for your room also makes a huge difference. All artificial plants are measured at their highest point, but the actual appearance can vary depending on how the leaves are arranged, especially on wired designs. A tree that is too small can feel disconnected from the room, while one that is too large can overwhelm nearby furniture.

Large artificial trees work best when used as visual anchor points within a room. Empty corners are often ideal because they can otherwise feel dark or unfinished. A tall tree beside a sofa, near patio doors, or next to a media unit can help balance the overall layout and soften hard architectural lines. Smaller artificial plants work better on shelves, sideboards, desks, bathrooms, and kitchen counters where they add texture without dominating the space.

The planter itself is also an important part of the styling. Most artificial plants arrive in simple nursery pots designed purely for stability during shipping. Placing the plant into a decorative planter immediately improves the final appearance and helps it feel integrated into the room.

Woven baskets create a softer and more relaxed look, while ceramic, stone-effect, or concrete-style planters tend to suit modern interiors particularly well. If additional height is needed, the plant can be raised inside the planter using bricks or blocks before covering the base.

Covering the base of the pot with ornamental gravel, bark, decorative stones, or soil helps conceal the artificial stem base and creates a much more realistic finish. Some customers even use real moss around the base of artificial trees to make them appear even more natural.

Layering different types of greenery throughout the room often creates the most balanced result. Rather than relying on a single plant, try combining taller trees with smaller foliage and trailing greenery. For example, a large olive tree in one corner can be complemented with eucalyptus stems on shelving or hanging plants above cabinets.

Trailing artificial plants are especially effective because they soften shelves and introduce movement into the room. Many hanging designs also feature wired stems, allowing you to arrange them naturally around shelves or planters.

Artificial plants are particularly useful in modern interiors because they soften harder materials such as glass, stone, metal, and concrete. In minimalist spaces, greenery adds warmth and texture without creating clutter. This is one reason artificial plants are so widely used not only in homes, but also in offices, hotels, restaurants, salons, and retail spaces.

Lighting can also affect how realistic artificial plants appear. Even though they do not require sunlight, placing them near windows or naturally bright areas helps them feel more believable within the room. Try to avoid placing large trees in awkward positions where they interrupt walkways or feel disconnected from the rest of the space.

For outdoor artificial plants and topiary, larger planters can also help create additional height. Standing the plant on bricks inside the planter before covering the base with gravel is a simple way to make arrangements appear more substantial and established.

It is also important to remember that artificial trees are not UV stabilised unless specifically stated. If the plant will be used outdoors or in strong direct sunlight, applying a UV protection spray can help preserve the colour and prolong the life of the foliage.

The most realistic arrangements usually feel effortless rather than overly styled. Rooms do not need dozens of plants to feel inviting. In many cases, one carefully shaped artificial tree combined with a few smaller accents creates a much stronger and more natural-looking result than filling every surface with greenery.

Taking a little extra time to arrange branches properly, choose the correct planter, and think carefully about placement makes all the difference. Artificial plants look most convincing when they feel like part of the room naturally rather than simply decorative accessories added afterwards.

About us...

Leaf was founded in 2018

Leaf was founded with a clear goal: to create affordable artificial plants that truly look and feel realistic. By refining materials, colour tones, and natural structure, we built a reputation for attention to detail and reliability. From a focused early range, Leaf grew steadily through craftsmanship, consistency and a commitment to producing artificial plants that enhance real spaces beautifully.

Expansion

As demand increased, Leaf expanded carefully into larger trees, architectural statement pieces and refined décor collections. Our growth has always been guided by customer feedback and long-term relationships. We have earned trust across retail, trade and hospitality sectors. Rather than chasing trends, we focused on quality and service, building lasting partnerships throughout the UK.

Specialist Supply

We stock some of the most realistic artificial plants and trees available on the UK market. We have many bespoke designs and lots of items that can't be found elsewhere so if you are looking for something a little bit special you have come to the right place. We can also provide planting suggestions and guidance on the best plants for your space.

New Warehouse 2022

In 2022, Leaf reached a major milestone by moving into a custom-built warehouse facility. This expansion strengthened our stock capacity, improved logistics and allowed greater control over quality and distribution. The investment supports continued growth, faster fulfilment and enhanced service for both retail and commercial customers.

Transition to Employee Ownership 2024

In 2024, we made one of the most important decisions in our company’s history: we transitioned Leaf to 100% employee ownership through an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT). This marked a major milestone in our journey and made us the first artificial plant company in the UK to adopt this model. By establishing Leaf Design Employee Ownership Trustees Limited, we ensured that the business is now owned on behalf of the people who help run and grow it every day.

This decision was rooted in long-term thinking. Over the years, we were approached multiple times with invitations to sell the company to larger organisations. While those conversations reflected the strength and reputation we had built, selling to an external buyer was never our preferred outcome. Leaf has always been more than a balance sheet — it represents years of commitment, hard work and shared effort from a dedicated team. Rather than selling to a corporation or private equity group, we wanted to secure the long-term future of the company for the people who helped build it.

Choosing employee ownership felt more fair, more ethical and more aligned with our values.

We believe that those who contribute to a company’s success should share in it.

Moving to an Employee Ownership Trust ensures that our team now has a meaningful stake in the future of Leaf. The trust structure safeguards the company’s independence while allowing profits to be reinvested into the business and shared with employees. It creates stability, continuity and a framework that prioritises sustainable growth over short-term gain.

Employee ownership also reflects how we have always operated. Our growth has been built on teamwork, shared responsibility and a collective focus on quality. By formalising that culture through ownership, we have strengthened it. Every employee now plays a role not just in the day-to-day running of the business, but in shaping its long-term direction. It encourages engagement, accountability and pride in what we create together.

This transition complements the other milestones in our recent journey, including our move into a custom-built warehouse facility in Louth in 2022. That expansion gave us greater capacity, improved logistics and stronger operational control. Now, with employee ownership in place, we have paired infrastructure with a structure designed to protect the company’s independence and long-term vision.

For our customers and partners, our commitment remains the same: realistic design, reliable service and fair pricing. What has changed is that the people behind those promises now share directly in the success of the business. That alignment strengthens everything we do.

Employee ownership was not simply a financial decision. It was a statement about who we are and how we want to grow. We chose a model that secures the future of Leaf for our team, supports sustainable development and ensures that the company remains rooted in the values on which it was built. As we continue to grow, we do so together — with shared purpose, shared responsibility and shared success. Press coverage on our transition can be viewed here.

Leaf Community

In addition to our commitments to our team and customers, our local community is very important to us. We support a number of local schools, charities and not-for-profit organisations. We also offer tours and talks to local community groups (for example, Young Farmers) some of which can be found on our Facebook pages and recent news.

We also have a newly developed showroom so if you are unsure about which plant you would like best we would always recommend visiting our showroom first to see the plants in person and chat to one of our team.
