Artificial plants for hotels, restaurants and bars

Most hotels, restaurants and bars need three kinds of artificial greenery: fire-retardant (FR) plants where the venue's fire risk assessment asks for them, UV-stabilised plants for terraces and sunny entrances, and trailing plants for ceilings, walls and dividers. We sell all three, and you can see them in person at our showroom in Louth, Lincolnshire, with no appointment needed on weekdays. Live prices and stock. Heights are overall, from the bottom of the pot (or of the stem, for stem flowers and ferns) to the top of the leaves. Spreads are as arranged in our photos, and wired stems can be shaped wider or narrower.

Hotels

Lobby and reception

The lobby is the first space guests see and usually the tallest, so it can take the largest trees. Our fire-retardant trees include a 210cm areca palm, a 210cm cherry blossom tree, a 200cm bamboo and a 180cm black olive tree with a natural trunk. Where fire-retardant stock isn't required, our Japanese fruticosa ficus trees with twisted trunks are among our bestsellers.

A matching pair either side of a reception desk or a seating area gives a lobby structure. As a rule of thumb, leave around 30–40cm between the top of the foliage and the ceiling. Our artificial plant size guide explains how to match height to the room.

Corridors and landings

Corridors and landings are often escape routes, so check your fire risk assessment before you put anything in them, and never narrow the route. Where plants are allowed, slim shapes such as snake plants take up very little floor space, and a trailing plant on a wall bracket takes up none.

Guest rooms

A small plant on a desk, a dressing table or a bathroom shelf makes a room feel finished, and housekeeping never has to water it. Artificial plants and flowers are also allergy-friendly, because they carry no pollen. Keep standard plants off sunny windowsills, where strong sun can fade foliage that isn't UV-stabilised. Meeting and function rooms

Function rooms change layout from one event to the next, so plants that are easy to move work best. Medium floor plants of around 90–150cm in weighted starter pots can be moved to frame a stage, a buffet or a doorway, then moved back against the walls. Keep a few matching pieces together so the room looks planned rather than filled in.

Terraces and entrances

Outdoors, use only UV-stabilised plants. A pair of UV-stabilised topiary trees, such as our 120cm bay laurel, frames an entrance, and UV-stabilised trees such as our 125cm areca palm give a terrace height and a little privacy. Our popular 60cm cedar cypress topiary is UV-stabilised but described for a sheltered spot, so place it under a canopy or beside a wall. Keep every plant, indoors or out, well away from patio heaters, fire pits, candles and smoking areas.

Restaurants and cafes

Tables and counters

Keep table plants low enough that diners can see each other: as a rule of thumb, under about 30cm. A single flower stem in a bud vase or a small potted plant is enough, and it won't crowd the table. Our plants under 50cm include plenty of table and counter sizes. On a counter or a bar top, our 45cm fire-retardant mini ficus topiary ball adds height without taking much space.

Dividers and screens

A row of tall, narrow plants breaks up a large dining room and gives tables a little privacy without building a wall. Bamboo is the classic choice because it is slim and upright. Our Natural Look bamboo trees include 120cm and 150cm heights, and our 200cm bamboo tree is supplied by our manufacturer as fire-retardant (FR) grade. Another option is a run of low planters along the top of a banquette or a shelf, with trailing plants spilling over the edge.

Keep dividers out of walkways and exit routes, and make sure each planter is heavy enough that it won't tip if a guest or a server knocks it.

Entrances and windows

A pair of topiary trees at the door tells passers-by the venue is open and cared for. Choose UV-stabilised ones for a door in the sun. In a sunny front window, use UV-stabilised plants too, because sun through glass can fade standard foliage.

Bars: ceilings and walls

Trailing plants overhead are an eye-catching way to add greenery to a bar, and they keep the floor clear. Our fire-retardant hanging plants are 68–128cm long as arranged in our photos. They come as bare stems, so you can fix them to a ceiling grid, a beam or a wire frame. They are also UV-stabilised, so the same designs can be used on a terrace. Our fire-retardant foliage stems, from 30cm to 90cm, can fill gaps between them.

Before you plan a ceiling installation:

• ask your fire risk assessor and, if you rent, your landlord to approve it;
• keep foliage well clear of sprinkler heads, smoke detectors, light fittings, emergency lighting and exit signs;
• use fixings rated for the weight, and check them when you clean;
• plan how you will reach the plants to clean them.

On walls, trailing plants on shelves above the back bar or along a high ledge soften hard surfaces. Our hanging artificial plants range includes many more trailing designs, but only some of them are fire-retardant, so check each product if your assessment requires it.

Planters for commercial spaces

Most of our trees and floor plants arrive in a weighted plastic starter pot. In a venue, standing that pot inside a decorative planter finishes the look and makes the plant harder to knock over.

• As a rule of thumb, choose a planter whose opening is a few centimetres wider than the starter pot, so the pot sits below the rim.
• Use the same planter style throughout a space; matching planters make a scheme look deliberate.
• Choose heavier planters for busy areas, and cover the top of the starter pot with bark, moss or gravel.
• For fire-retardant schemes, remember that planters and top dressings are separate items and need checking against your fire risk assessment too.

Planning a fit-out

1. Walk the space. Note the zones that need greenery, the ceiling heights and the escape routes that must stay clear.
2. Check the requirements. Ask your fire risk assessor whether any area needs fire-retardant decorations, and list the outdoor spots that need UV-stabilised plants.
3. Choose a short list. Repeating a few designs across a venue looks more considered than using many different ones.
4. See them first. Visit our showroom, or order one of each design, before placing a large order.
5. Plan the cleaning. Decide who will dust the plants and how often before they go in, especially for anything overhead.

Fire-retardant and UV: what to ask for

Products marked fire-retardant are supplied by our manufacturer as fire-retardant (FR) grade. Fire-retardant does not mean fireproof: the plants are harder to ignite, but they can still burn. Whether your venue needs fire-retardant plants is a question for its fire risk assessment. We can supply fire certificates for commercial projects. Contact us for more information. For terraces, gardens and sunny entrances, choose UV-stabilised products. UV-stabilised products are guaranteed against fading for one year.

Cleaning routines

Artificial plants need no watering, but in a busy venue they collect dust, and near kitchens and bars they can collect grease too. A simple routine keeps them looking fresh.

• Weekly: dust table and counter plants with a soft brush or a dry microfibre cloth.
• Monthly: wipe plastic and real-touch leaves on floor plants and trees with a cloth dampened with mild soapy water, then dry them. Dust silk leaves dry. Test a hidden leaf first.
• Ceiling and high foliage: use a long-handled soft duster, or blow the dust off with a hairdryer on its cool setting, outside opening hours. Add it to the deep-clean rota so it isn't forgotten.
• Outdoor plants: brush off dust and cobwebs; where the product description says the plant can be hosed off, a gentle spray of cold water works too.
