Artificial palm trees: areca, kentia, phoenix and more compared

Areca palms have feathery, arching fronds on several slim stems and give a full, soft shape, while kentia palms have broader, darker fronds on long stalks and look more open and formal. Live prices and stock. Heights are overall, from the bottom of the pot (or of the stem, for stem flowers and ferns) to the top of the leaves. Spreads are as arranged in our photos, and wired stems can be shaped wider or narrower.

Areca, kentia and other palms compared

Areca palm

The areca, sometimes called the butterfly palm, grows as a cluster of slim stems with feathery fronds that arch outwards. It fills a corner well and has a relaxed, tropical look. It is also our most popular palm: the 120cm Premium Areca Palm is our best-selling palm of 2026, followed by the 90cm areca. Our arecas run from 50cm to 210cm. The 130cm and 150cm Areca Palm Artificial Trees have silk leaves with natural palm frond additions at the base, while the 110cm and 150cm arecas potted in black pots are made entirely from artificial materials. Kentia palm

The kentia has darker, broader fronds on long stalks that arch over at the tips, giving an open, elegant outline. It is a traditional choice for hotel lobbies and formal rooms, and it needs space around it to show its shape. Our kentia palms come in 120cm, 130cm and 150cm, and the 120cm and 130cm trees have silk leaves with natural additions at the base. As arranged in our photos they spread 70–110cm, so allow plenty of floor space.

Areca or kentia?

Choose an areca for a fuller, bushier shape that suits a corner or a group of plants. Choose a kentia for a single, more formal palm with space around it, such as beside a reception desk. Both can look realistic: the leaf material and the base matter more than the species, and several of our arecas and kentias have silk leaves with natural additions at the base.

Cycas

Cycas, often sold as the sago palm, is not a true palm, but its stiff, glossy fronds radiating from a short trunk give it a compact, architectural shape that suits modern rooms. Our 60cm and 70cm cycas have authentic trunk detailing and are as wide as they are tall as arranged in our photos. The 120cm UV-stabilised cycas has natural wood trunk decoration. It is wide as we arrange it, but you can make it narrower by not folding the wired leaves out so far.

Phoenix and date palms

Phoenix palms, the date palm family, have long, feather-shaped fronds on a sturdy trunk and a classic Mediterranean look. Our 180cm Artificial Tropical Palm Tree is a replica of a large phoenix palm. For high ceilings and large rooms, the 210cm Spiny Date Palm and the 210cm fire-retardant phoenix palm with a natural trunk add real height.

Traveller palm

The traveller palm has large, paddle-shaped leaves arranged like an open fan, so it looks best against a wall, where the fan is seen face on. Ours come in 120cm and 150cm UV-stabilised versions with silk leaves, and as a 200cm indoor tree that spreads 120cm as arranged in our photos.

Princess, raphis, fan and coco palms

Our princess palms show a visible trunk beneath the fronds: the 100cm tree has a brown trunk, and the 130cm tree has a realistic natural material trunk and arrives fully assembled. The raphis, or lady palm, has fan-shaped leaves on thin stems, and our 100cm tree has silk leaves and a natural trunk. The 120cm fan palm has plastic leaves and a plastic trunk with natural material additions. The 260cm coco palm is our tallest palm, with a 140cm spread as arranged in our photos.

Mini and unpotted palms

For tables and shelves, the 50cm mini palm comes in a plastic decorative planter, and the 80cm Premium mini palm comes in a weighted pot. The 75cm and 118cm palms are supplied unpotted as bare stems, with 6 and 11 leaves respectively, so you can set them in a planter of your choice.

Silhouette and density

Palms take up more floor space than most trees of the same height. Several of ours are almost as wide as they are tall as arranged in our photos: the 130cm areca and 130cm kentia palm trees both spread 100cm, and so does the 125cm UV-stabilised areca. Measure the width of your spot as carefully as the height.

• Full and feathery (areca): fills a corner and screens what is behind it.
• Open and arching (kentia, phoenix): needs clear space around it to show its outline.
• Compact (cycas, princess, raphis): suits a smaller spot or a group with other plants.
• Fan-shaped (traveller, fan palm): looks best against a wall.

Many of our palms have wired stems, so you can bring the fronds in for a tighter space or spread them out for a fuller look. As arranged in our photos, most of our palms spread 60–100cm.

For a pair either side of a doorway or a reception desk, choose two of the same palm so the outlines match. For a group, combine a tall, open palm with a lower, fuller one, such as a kentia behind a cycas, so the fronds overlap without hiding each other.

Choosing the size

• 50–90cm: mini palms and cycas for a side table, a low shelf or the floor beside a chair.
• 100–130cm: beside a sofa or in the corner of a smaller room. This is the biggest part of our range, and it includes the 120cm Premium Areca.
• 140–160cm: a floor corner in a room with a standard ceiling.
• 180–260cm: high ceilings, stairwells, atriums and receptions.

As a rule of thumb, leave 30–40cm between the top of the fronds and the ceiling, and allow for any extra height a planter adds. Where to put an artificial palm

• Living rooms: an areca or kentia of 120–150cm fills a corner or the space beside a sofa. Keep fronds clear of lamps and door swings.
• Bedrooms and home offices: a smaller palm, cycas or raphis gives greenery without taking over the floor.
• Bathrooms: a compact palm on the floor or a mini palm on a shelf suits the space and needs no light.
• Hotels, restaurants and offices: pairs of tall palms frame an entrance, a reception desk or a row of tables, and fire-retardant palms are available for spaces where fire performance matters.
• Conservatories: a sunny conservatory counts as outdoors for fading, so choose a UV-stabilised palm, or keep an indoor palm in a shaded spot.

Palms need no watering or light, and only an occasional dust. Our care guide has cleaning tips.

Outdoor palms

Only our UV-stabilised palms are made for outdoor use: the 120cm and 150cm traveller palms, the 125cm and 180cm arecas, the 120cm cycas and the 125cm raphis palm. UV-stabilised products are guaranteed against fading for one year. They suit a sunny patio, a balcony or either side of a front door.

All our other palms are for indoor use or a covered spot out of direct sun, and that includes sun through a conservatory roof. Fire-retardant palms

For hotels, restaurants and offices where the fire performance of furnishings matters, the 210cm phoenix palm with a natural trunk and the 210cm areca palm are supplied by our manufacturer as fire-retardant (FR) grade, as is a 40cm palm tree stem for smaller displays. Fire-retardant does not mean fireproof: these products can still burn. We can supply fire certificates for commercial projects. Contact us for more information. Potting and setting up

Most of our palms arrive in a weighted plastic starter pot, ready to display, and the starter-pot size is in the table. The 50cm and 90cm palms in decorative planters can go straight on display. For the others, choose a planter whose opening is a few centimetres wider than the starter pot, stand the pot inside and top it with bark, gravel or moss. Browse our planters.
