Artificial ficus trees: which one should you choose?

Choose an artificial ficus by its shape first: a twisted-trunk Japanese fruticosa-style tree for a sculptural look, a bushy ficus for a full, leafy corner, or a fiddle leaf fig or rubber plant for large, bold leaves. Twisted-trunk Japanese fruticosa-style ficus

Twisted-trunk fruticosa-style trees are our most popular ficus: the 150cm, 120cm and 140cm trees are all among our ten best-selling products of 2026. Fruticosa-style trees have a sculpted, curving trunk under a rounded canopy, a look associated with Japanese gardens and bonsai. The trunk gives the tree a shape of its own, so it looks complete even when it stands alone in an empty corner.

The 120cm and 150cm twisted-trunk trees

These are the same design in two heights. Both spread about 60cm as arranged in our photos and arrive in a weighted starter pot about 17cm across, so they fit a corner, the end of a sofa or a spot beside a doorway. The 150cm tree has a natural-style synthetic trunk. Choose the 120cm tree beside furniture or under a lower ceiling, and the 150cm tree as a floor tree in a room with a standard ceiling.

The 140cm Japanese fruticosa tree

This tree is part of our premium range, and its main trunk is real natural wood. Because the trees are handmade, each trunk is slightly different from the next. It spreads about 60cm as arranged in our photos and comes in an 18cm-wide starter pot. Choose it where people will see the trunk up close, such as in a hallway or beside a reception desk.

The 180cm fruticosa triple ball topiary

For a more formal shape, this tree carries its 1,984 leaves in three stacked balls. At 180cm tall and 70cm wide as arranged in our photos, it suits a room with a high ceiling, a reception area, or a pair either side of an indoor entrance.

A slimmer twisted ficus

If floor space is tight, the 150cm Artificial Twisted Ficus Tree is 40cm wide as arranged in our photos, so it fits a narrow hallway or the gap beside a bookcase. For similar sculptural shapes, browse our Japanese-style trees.

Which ficus: fruticosa, benjamina, fiddle leaf or rubber plant?

Ficus is a large plant family, and its species look very different. Apart from the fruticosa style above, these are the types to compare.

Bushy ficus and the weeping fig look

The ficus many people picture is the weeping fig (Ficus benjamina), a full, rounded tree with small leaves on arching branches. We don't sell a tree labelled benjamina, but for a full, leafy canopy, look at our bushy-shape ficus trees at 60cm, 90cm and 120cm, or our evergreen ficus trees at 90cm and 110cm. Their stems are wired, so you can shape them to fill a space. The 90cm bushy-shape tree is among our 30 best sellers this year, and the 90cm evergreen ficus is only 20cm wide as arranged in our photos, the narrowest tree in our ficus collection.

Variegated and red ficus

Variegated leaves add lighter tones to a corner. The 130cm variegated tree has silk leaves in green with white edges, and the 160cm tree has natural-looking variegated leaves and an 80cm spread. For warmer colour, the 120cm Capensia red ficus has green and red foliage on a real wood trunk, and the 80cm red and green ficus suits a sideboard or a low floor spot.

Fiddle leaf fig (Ficus lyrata)

The fiddle leaf fig has large, violin-shaped leaves on upright stems, so it looks bolder and more architectural than a small-leaved ficus. We sell it in sizes from a 38cm tabletop plant to 180cm floor trees, and our 120cm and 180cm Premium trees have realistic plastic leaves and stems. Rubber plant (Ficus elastica)

The rubber plant has broad, glossy, deep green leaves and a strong upright shape. Our 120cm Artificial Rubber Tree recreates that look with wired stems and spreads about 60cm as arranged in our photos. It suits a modern room where a bushy tree would look too busy.

Longifolia and retusa

The 100cm longifolia ficus has silk leaves, a thick natural trunk and hanging vines that you can remove if you prefer. At 90cm wide as arranged in our photos, it is almost as wide as it is tall, so it suits a low, open spot. The 180cm retusa ficus has 1,134 leaves and is fire-retardant grade (see below).

Twisted or straight trunk?

A twisted trunk is the first thing people notice, so it works best where the tree stands on its own and the trunk is on show: an empty corner, a hallway, or beside a window that doesn't get direct sun. A straight trunk under a bushy canopy draws the eye to the leaves instead, which suits a tree placed behind a sofa or grouped with other plants.

Trunk materials vary across the range. The 140cm Japanese fruticosa tree, the 120cm Capensia red ficus and the 130cm white-edge ficus have real wood trunks, and the 100cm longifolia has a thick natural trunk. The 150cm twisted-trunk tree has a natural-style synthetic trunk, and the 180cm retusa has a plastic trunk. Choosing the height

As a rule of thumb, leave around 30–40cm between the top of the foliage and the ceiling, and add any height a planter will give the tree before you decide. Our artificial plant size guide explains how to measure.

• 45–60cm: a sideboard, desk or shelf. The 45cm mini ficus topiary ball and the 60cm bushy-shape ficus suit these spots.
• 80–110cm: beside an armchair, at the end of a sofa or either side of a console table.
• 120–140cm: beside a sofa or in the corner of a smaller room. The 120cm and 140cm fruticosa-style trees and the rubber plant are in this range.
• 150–160cm: a floor corner in a room with a standard ceiling.
• 180cm: rooms with higher ceilings, landings and reception areas.

Spread matters as much as height. As arranged in our photos, our ficus trees range from 20cm to 90cm wide, and most are 50–70cm wide. Wired stems let you shape many of them narrower for a tight corner or wider as a centrepiece.

Potting and planters

Most of our ficus trees arrive in a weighted plastic starter pot, ready to display, and the starter-pot size is in the table. One 90cm ficus comes with a separate metal planter included, and some other listings offer a metal planter as an option. To finish the look:

1. Choose a decorative planter whose opening is a few centimetres wider than the starter pot, so the pot drops inside rather than resting on the rim.
2. Stand the starter pot inside and pack the gap if it moves.
3. Cover the top with gravel, bark or moss to hide the pot.

Twisted-trunk trees look particularly good finished this way, because a layer of gravel around the base draws attention to the trunk. Can artificial ficus trees go outside?

All but one of our ficus trees are made for indoor use or a covered spot out of direct sun, because they are not UV-stabilised. Strong sunlight gradually fades foliage that isn't UV-stabilised, and that includes sun through glass in a conservatory or a south-facing window, so turn the tree every few weeks if it stands in bright light.

The exception is the 120cm UV Resistant Japanese Ficus Leaf Tree, which is UV-stabilised and suitable for outdoor use. UV-stabilised products are guaranteed against fading for one year. For more options, see our UV-stabilised outdoor trees and our outdoor artificial plants guide.

Ficus trees for offices and commercial spaces

Many of our ficus trees are suitable for both homes and commercial spaces, and the 180cm trees give a reception or lobby height without taking up much floor space. For settings where the fire performance of furnishings matters, the 180cm retusa ficus and the 45cm mini ficus topiary ball are supplied by our manufacturer as fire-retardant (FR) grade.
