Artificial olive trees: how to choose the right one

The right artificial olive tree comes down to three things: the height your room can take, the spread you have space for, and how closely people will see it. All of our olive trees are made for indoor use or a covered spot out of direct sun: none of them are UV-stabilised. The table below compares every tree we sell, with live prices and stock.

Live prices and stock. Heights are overall, from the bottom of the pot (or of the stem, for stem flowers and ferns) to the top of the leaves. Spreads are as arranged in our photos, and wired stems can be shaped wider or narrower.

Choosing the right size

Measure from the floor to the ceiling first. As a rule of thumb, leave around 30–40cm of clear space above the foliage so the tree doesn't look squeezed against the ceiling. If you plan to stand the tree inside a taller decorative planter, add the planter's extra height to the tree's height before you decide.

• 65–90cm: a low sideboard, a console table or beside a chair. The bushier shapes suit surfaces; the topiary shape suits a pair either side of an indoor doorway.
• 120–125cm: beside a sofa, in a hallway corner or at the end of a kitchen island.
• 150–180cm: a statement corner in a room with a standard ceiling.
• 200cm and 250cm: high ceilings, stairwells, atriums and receptions. These two come in their own stone-effect planters.

Spread matters as much as height. Most of our olive trees have wired branches, so you can shape them narrower for a tight corner or wider as a centrepiece. Trunks, leaves and olives: what makes one look real

Three details make the biggest difference to how real an olive tree looks.

The trunk

Our Natural Look olive trees (120cm, 150cm and 180cm) and the 180cm black olive tree have natural wood trunks. Our 125cm Premium tree has several real wood stems. Real wood reads as real even up close, which matters most where people will stand next to the tree.

The leaves

Olive leaves are narrow, silvery-green and grow densely. Several of our trees use silk leaves. The 160cm tree has 1,296 leaves and the 180cm black olive tree has 2,925. A denser canopy looks fuller from across a room.

The olives

Some of our trees carry realistic olives: the 125cm Premium tree, the 120cm Natural tree and the 160cm tree (72 olives). They look edible, so take care in homes with small children.

Can artificial olive trees go outside?

None of our olive trees are UV-stabilised, so they are made for indoor use or a covered spot out of direct sun. Strong sunlight gradually fades foliage that isn't UV-stabilised, and that includes sun through glass in a conservatory or south-facing window. Turn the tree every few weeks if it sits in bright light.

For a sunny patio, balcony or front door, choose from our UV-stabilised outdoor trees instead. They are guaranteed against fading for one year.

Potting and planters

Most of our olive trees arrive in a weighted plastic starter pot, ready to display. The starter-pot size for each tree is in the table. To finish the look:

1. Choose a decorative planter whose opening is a few centimetres wider than the starter pot, so the pot drops inside and sits below the rim.
2. Stand the starter pot inside and pack the gap if it moves.
3. Cover the top with bark, gravel or moss to hide the pot.

Shaping your tree when it arrives

Trees are compressed for delivery, so most need shaping when they arrive. Bend the branches outwards and slightly down, then separate the leaves so they face in different directions rather than all pointing up. Our guide to fluffing and shaping artificial plants shows how. Olive trees for offices, hotels and restaurants

The 200cm and 250cm trees are suitable for both residential and commercial spaces. For settings where the fire performance of furnishings matters, our 180cm black olive tree is supplied by our manufacturer as fire-retardant (FR) grade.
