What size planter does my artificial plant need?

Measure the starter pot your plant arrives in, then choose a planter with an opening about 5–10cm wider than the pot and an inside at least as deep. That one measurement matters more than the planter's outer size. The table below compares every planter we sell by outer height and width, with live prices and stock.

Live prices and stock. Heights are overall, from the bottom of the pot (or of the stem, for stem flowers and ferns) to the top of the leaves. Spreads are as arranged in our photos, and wired stems can be shaped wider or narrower.

How to measure the starter pot

Most of our plants arrive in a plastic weighted starter pot. You can display a plant as it arrives, but a decorative planter hides the pot and finishes the look. To size one:

1. Measure straight across the top of the starter pot, from the outside of the rim to the outside of the rim. This is its diameter.
2. Measure its height from the base to the rim.
3. Look at the lowest leaves. If they spread out below the rim of the pot, allow a little extra room so they can sit over the planter's edge.

If your plant hasn't arrived yet, use the starter-pot size given in its product description, then measure the pot again when it arrives, before you add packing and top dressing.

Most plant descriptions give the starter-pot size, and many of our plant guides show it in their comparison tables. As a guide to our range, plants under 50cm usually come in pots of about 9–13cm across. Plants of 50–150cm mostly come in pots of 12–18cm, and trees of 150–180cm mostly in pots of 17–18cm. Some large plants come in bigger pots: our 110cm and 150cm real-touch orchids, for example, arrive in a 27cm pot.

Some plants, such as ferns and grasses sold as bare stems, arrive without a pot at all. Group several in a planter and hold them in place with dry floral foam or gravel.

The three fit rules

These rules of thumb apply to every plant, from a desk orchid to a 180cm tree.

1. Opening: 5–10cm wider than the starter pot

An opening 5cm wider than the pot lets it drop in snugly with a little room to pack the sides. An opening 10cm wider gives you more room to pack and top-dress. Much wider than that and you'll need a lot of packing, and a small plant can look lost.

Check the opening, not the outer width. Our listings give each planter's outer size, and the opening is often narrower than the widest point, especially on rounded, bellied, bowl-shaped or tapered planters. Don't assume a planter 40cm wide has a 40cm opening. Where a product description gives the inner opening, use that figure. Otherwise, contact us before you order.

2. Depth: at least as deep as the pot

The inside of the planter should be at least as deep as the starter pot, so the pot's rim sits about 2–5cm below the planter's rim. That leaves room for a top dressing that hides the pot completely. If the planter is much deeper, raise the pot on a base inside it (see below). If it is shallower, the pot's rim will show.

3. Proportion: a quarter to a third of the plant's height

For floor plants and trees, a planter about a quarter to a third of the plant's height looks balanced. A 150cm tree, for example, suits a planter around 40–50cm tall. Low, bushy plants can take a planter up to half their height, so a 60cm fern suits a planter of 20–30cm. Keep the planter narrower than the foliage, so the leaves spread out over the rim; a planter wider than the plant makes the plant look small. For a pair of plants either side of a doorway, use matching planters so the two read as one design.

Quick fit list

Using the 5–10cm rule, look for a planter opening of about:

• 10cm starter pot: 15–20cm opening
• 12cm starter pot: 17–22cm opening
• 15cm starter pot: 20–25cm opening
• 18cm starter pot: 23–28cm opening
• 27cm starter pot: 32–37cm opening

These are rules of thumb. Always check the opening of the planter you choose, as its outer width won't tell you.

Floor plants and desk plants

Desk, shelf and table plants

Our small ceramic planters are 12–16cm tall, and most of our small metal planters are 17–20cm tall. Our 18cm metal planters have been our best-selling planters in 2026. Floor plants and trees

Our fibreglass composite planters range from 21cm to 62cm tall, and many stand on wooden legs. Our 51cm XL silver metal planter is 41cm wide. For trees over 150cm, choose a planter with a wide, flat base rather than a narrow one on legs, so the tree stays steady. See all our large plant pots.

Low bowls

Wide, low bowls such as our 29cm XL silver champagne bowl suit a group of small plants or bare-stem ferns planted together, and they work well as table centrepieces. See our bowls.

If you'd rather not match a planter yourself, many of our plants come with a planter, or offer one as an option.

Choosing a material

• Metal: many of our metal planters and bowls are handmade, in hammered, plated, etched and honeycomb finishes. Where they are handmade, each one has small, intentional differences.
• Ceramic: small plain or patterned planters for desks and shelves.
• Fibreglass composite: our large composite planters are hand finished in a rustic style, in stone, woven, rattan and embossed effects.

Choose the material to suit the room, and the size to suit the plant. A plain planter lets a detailed plant stand out; a patterned or textured planter suits a simpler plant.

Filling and top dressing

Artificial plants don't need soil or drainage, so the only job of the filling is to hold the pot steady and out of sight.

1. If the planter is deeper than the starter pot, raise the pot on a base: an upturned pot, a block of polystyrene or a layer of gravel.
2. Stand the pot in the centre with its rim 2–5cm below the planter's rim, and check it is level.
3. Pack the gap around the sides with scrunched newspaper, bubble wrap or polystyrene so the pot can't move.
4. Cover the top with a top dressing: bark, moss, gravel or pebbles. Bark and moss suit ferns and woodland plants. Gravel and pebbles suit olive trees, palms and modern planters.

Keeping a tall tree steady

Tall trees can be top-heavy once their branches are spread, even in a weighted starter pot. In a large planter:

• Put weight in the bottom before the pot goes in: a bag of sand or gravel, or a couple of bricks.
• Pack the sides tightly, so the starter pot can't rock inside the planter.
• Avoid tall, narrow planters on legs for the tallest trees.
• Stand tall trees away from door swings and busy walkways, where they are likely to be knocked.
