Here is a secret that transforms how real a faux plant looks: it is not just what you buy, it is what you do in the first five minutes after it arrives. Plants are boxed compressed for transport, so a new artificial plant almost always looks flat and a little sorry for itself out of the packaging. A few minutes of fluffing and shaping fixes that completely.
Why new plants look flat
To fit a large plant into a manageable box, the branches are folded inward and the foliage is squashed. This is completely normal and not a fault. The wired stems are designed to be repositioned, so all that compression is easily undone once you know what to do.
Work from the inside out
Start at the centre and work outward. Gently pull each main branch away from the trunk to its natural angle, then move on to the smaller side branches. Bend them into staggered positions so the plant fills space in three dimensions rather than sitting in a flat fan. A little downward droop on lower branches looks more natural than everything reaching up.
Fluff and separate the leaves
Run your fingers through the foliage to separate leaves that are stuck together, and twist individual leaves so they face different directions. Real plants have leaves at every angle catching the light differently — copying that randomness is what convinces the eye.
Even out the silhouette
Step back and check the shape from a couple of metres. Fill any obvious gaps by teasing nearby branches across, and turn the fullest side to face the room. Aim for natural asymmetry, not a perfect ball — real artificial trees are always a little uneven.
Give it a moment to settle
Leaves may hold slight creases at first; these relax within a day or two, and a quick warm-air blast from a hairdryer helps stubborn ones.
